What do the DDR3 numbers mean?
DDR3 naming conventions break from the standards set forth in the age of DDR and DDR2. Under the DDR3 conventions, modules have a DDR3 number and a PC3 number. Only one of these numbers is strictly necessary to identify the characteristics of a particular module. The DDR3 number corresponds to Millions of Data transfers per second, while the PC3 number corresponds, roughly, to the Peak transfer rate of a module (in MB/s).
The Wikipedia article on DDR3 shows the correspondences between the DDR3 and PC3 numbers along with loads of other information on the subject.
